Sent to Singapore to help deter Japanese advances
in the region, the battleship Prince of Wales and battle cruiser Repulse
were symbols of British naval power. On December 8th, 1941,these two capital
ships, escorted by two E Class destroyers (HMS Electra, HMS Express), one S
Class destroyer (HMS Tenedos), and the Australian navy destroyer HMAS
Vampire, sent out from Singapore to attack a Japanese invasion force. This
mission was aborted and the group, minus the detached HMS Tenedos, turned
back towards Singapore. However, they had already been spotted by Japanese
aircraft and submarines, and in the ensuing bomb and torpedo attackby
bombers, both capital ships were sunk.
