The 2-stroke, 3-cylinder Honda NS500 replaced the NR500 for the 1982 season. After a disappointing debut season, the NS500 shined in 1983 taking out the championship with the young 21-year-old Freddie Spencer at the helm. Spencer?s season long title fight with threetime world champion Kenny Roberts produced one of the most exciting seasons in the history of GP racing.
Going into the final round, Spencer lead Roberts by just 5 points. In a tough final race, despite Roberts taking the checkered flag, Spencer?s second placing gave him enough points to secure the championship by 2 points, making him the youngest ever 500cc GP champion. The Honda-Spencer combination had the perfect balance of youth, natural ability and the finest engineering technology. |
